“我想到个办法，”扫烟囱的人说，“咱们躲到角落里那个大百花香罐子里去吧；在那儿我们可以躺在玫瑰花瓣和薰衣草上，如果他靠近我们，就往他眼睛里撒盐。”

“不，那可不行，”她说，“因为我知道老中国人偶和百花香罐子曾经是恋人，曾经那么亲密的人之间总会残留着一份好感的。不，我们除了到外面的广阔世界去，已经没有别的办法了。”

当扫烟囱的人看到她态度十分坚决时，他说：“我的路是穿过炉灶，再爬上烟囱。你有勇气和我一起爬过炉膛和铁管吗？等我们到了烟囱里，我就知道该怎么应对了。”

“现在我们在烟囱里了，”他说；“看，上面有一颗美丽的星星在闪耀呢。”

那是一颗真正的星星在照耀着他们，仿佛要给他们指明道路。

于是扫烟囱的人试着劝她，说起了老中国人偶，还有“山羊腿少将中士指挥官”；但她哭得那么伤心，不停地亲吻她的小扫烟囱的人，直到他不得不按她的要求去做，尽管这要求很傻。

少将还站在他原来的位置上，看上去若有所思。

“你真的这么想吗？”她说；然后他们爬上桌子，站在了原来的位置上。

“既然我们没做成什么好事，”扫烟囱的人说，“我们还不如就待在这儿呢，也不用费这么大的劲儿了。”

“我希望祖父能被接上，”牧羊女说。“不知道这得花多少钱呢？”

她的愿望实现了。家人把中国人偶的后背修好了，还在他的脖子上打了个结实的铆钉；他看上去完好如初，但再也不能点头了。

扫烟囱的人和小牧羊女可怜巴巴地望着老中国人偶，因为他们担心他会点头；但他点不了头了：而且，总是要对陌生人说自己脖子后面有个铆钉，也太烦人了。
